  10. Abney level: A hand held instrument for measuring inclination
  11. precise to about 0.2 degrees.  There are several manufacturers.
  12. Cost about $75 to $150.
  13.  
  14. Acre: 10 square chains.  43560 square feet.
  15.  
  16. Aerial photo: A photograph taken straight down from a high
  17. altitude airplane so that the photo looks like a map.
  18.  
  19. Are: Pronounced "air".  100 square meters.
  20.  
  21. Azimuth: The common method of giving compass directions, whereby
  22. a full circle is divided into 360 degrees, starting at North and
  23. turning clockwise.  I'm told that this doesn't apply in the
  24. Southern Hemisphere.
  25.  
  26. Backsight: Instrument readings taken to the FROM station, from
  27. the TO station, but recorded as if the sight were taken normally.
  28.  
  29. Blunder: A BIG mistake, obvious and correctable.
  30.  
  31. Brunton pocket transit: A sighting compass precise to about 0.5
  32. degree.  Brunton makes the original; there are several
  33. imitators.  Also known as Army Artillery Compass when graduated
  34. in gradians to confound The Enemy.  Cost: about $200.
  35.  
  36. Cardinal direction: Any one of the four directions; North, East,
  37. South, or West.
  38.  
  39. Chain: 66 feet.  4 rods.
  40.  
  41. Clinometer: Inclinometer.  A device to measure inclination.
  42.  
  43. Closure Error: When surveying in a loop and making the ending
  44. station the same as the beginning station, the calculated
  45. distance between these two stations.

  47. Compass direction: A direction from one station to another
  48. station, measured as azimuth.

  54. Corner: A point on a property boundary, established to define
  55. that boundary.

  57. Cosine: Abbr.  COS.  Pronounced "cosign".  A mathematical
  58. function of an angle, equal to the adjacent side divided by the
  59. hypotenuse (longest side) of a right triangle containing that
  60. angle.
  61.  
  62. Declination: The angle difference between the compass direction
  63. towards Magnetic North and that towards True North.
  64.  
  65. Degree: The three hundred sixtieth part of a full circle.
  66. 1° = 1/360 of a turnaround.
  67.  
  68. Departure: What professional surveyors call the east distance.
  69.  
  70. Elevation: The distance above (or below) an arbitrary zero level.

  72. Error: The difference between a measured value and reality.

  74. Forester's Compass: Staff Compass.  A surveying compass precise
  75. to about 0.2 degrees.  Cost: $400.

  77. Furlong: 10 chains.  660 feet.

  79. Gradians: A method of giving compass directions, whereby a full
  80. circle is divided into 400 gradians, starting at North and
  81. turning clockwise.  The Army uses this to confuse The Enemy.

  83. Hectare: 100 ares.  10000 square meters.  2.47 acres.

  85. Inclination: The angle in degrees between a line of sight and
  86. horizontal.  Up is +, down is -.

  88. Inclinometer: Clinometer.  An instrument to measure inclination.

  90. Land description: The written definition of a piece of property.

  92. Latitude: What professional surveyors call the north distance.
  93.  
  94. Legal description: A land description typed by an attorney's
  95. secretary.

  97. Lensatic compass: Also known as the Army Marching Compass.  A
  98. diabolically engineered compass graduated in bassackwards
  99. whatchamacallits in order to totally confuse The Enemy.  Precise
  100. to about 10 degrees.  Cost: about $10.

  104. Line: A part of a property boundary between two corners.

  106. Link: A hundredth part of a chain, 0.66 feet.

  108. Magnetic North: The direction towards the Magnetic North Pole.
  109. This is where the compass needle points.

  111. Minute: The sixtieth part of a degree.  1' = 1/60°  60' = 1°

  113. Pace: The distance covered in one step.  Usually between 2.5 and
  114. 3.0 feet.  1000 double paces of 2.64 feet define the mile as 5280
  115. feet.

  117. Perch: A rod, a pole, 16.5 feet.

  119. Percent closure error: The closure error divided by the run
  120. times 100%.

  122. Plat: What professional surveyors call a map.

  124. Pole: A rod, a perch, 16.5 feet.

  126. Quadrants: An archaeic method of giving compass directions,
  127. utilized to simplify the arithmetic B.C.  [Before Calculator]
  128. Presently used to keep landowners stupid.

  130. Radians: A mathematical method of measuring angles, used by some
  131. calculators, computers, and pure mathematicians.  A Radian =
  132. 57.2957795131 degrees.

  134. Ranger: A sighting compass imported by Silva Compass, precise to
  135. about 1 degree.  Cost: about $41.

  137. Rod: A perch, a pole, 16.5 feet.
  138.  
  139. Rood: 40 square rods, perches or poles.  10890 square feet,
  140. one quarter acre.
  141.  
  142. Rope: 20 feet.
  143.  
  144. Run: The distance surveyed since an arbitrary starting station.
  145.  
  146. Second: The sixtieth part of a minute. 1" = 1/60'  60" = 1'

  148. Sine: Abbr.  SIN.  Pronounced "sign".  A mathematical function of
  149. an angle, equal to the opposite side divided by the hypotenuse
  150. (longest side) in a right triangle containing that angle.

  154. Square perch: A square rod, 16.5 * 16.5 = 272.25 square feet.

  156. Staff Compass: Forester's Compass.  A surveying compass precise
  157. to about 0.2 degrees.  Cost: $400.

  159. Station: A place where surveyor's measurements are taken.
  160.  
  161. Stringbox: A distance measuring instrument which operates by
  162. measuring a thread pulled from it.
  163.  
  164. Tape distance: A distance from one station to another, usually
  165. measured in feet.
  166.  
  167. Theodolite: A surveying instrument which can measure the angle
  168. between two directions, as well as the angle between a direction
  169. and Magnetic North.  Precision: about 0.01 degree.  Cost:
  170. $thousands.
  171.  
  172. Topo map, topographic map: A map showing the shape of the surface
  173. of the land.  In the United States, usually a 7.5 minute map at
  174. 2000 feet per inch showing all surface features.  Cost: about $3.
  175.  
  176. Transit: A surveying instrument, similar to a theodolite, which
  177. can measure the angle between two directions, as well as the
  178. angle between a direction and Magnetic North.  Additionally, the
  179. sights can be easily turned around (transited) to obtain a
  180. backsight.  Precision: about 0.01 degree.  Cost: $thousands.

  182. True North: The direction towards the North Pole.
  183.  
  184. °: Degree symbol if you can read full ASCII.
  185.  
  186. ': Minute symbol.  Also foot symbol.
  187.  
  188. ": Second symbol.  Also inch symbol.
  189.  
  190. Another last chance to tell you to take precise compass readings,
  191. with a double check and a backsight.  Nearly all your error is in
  192. the compass with the poor man's method of land surveying.
  193.
